These large heavy bodied snakes are widespread in tropical rainforests in South and
Central America.
Like all boas it is non-venomous and kills its prey by constriction. Adults can reach lengths of up to 13 feet .
They are active mainly at night. When hunting at night they use their heat pits to sense prey .
Females are larger than males. They are ovoviviparous which means the eggs develop inside the female. After a 6-to-8-month gestation period, she will give live birth to up to 60 fully developed babies.
After a large meal they don’t eat again for weeks. They can live for over 30 years.
